Joining the higher education sector as a senior administrator, you may find that things don’t work exactly the way you expect, or that the culture differs significantly from other industries. It can be challenging to learn everything you need to know to hit the ground running and settle into your new position.

Part of our mission at CAUBO is to strengthen the capacity of leaders in the sector by connecting you with peers and information, enabling you to both pursue opportunities and create solutions for shared issues. In these challenging times, it is more essential than ever for those of us working in this area to support and share with one another.

CAUBO has created a two-day, in-person higher education onboarding program for new Vice-Presidents, Finance and Administration and Associate Vice-Presidents who are new to their role and/or the sector. The goal is to introduce and discuss topics specific to higher education, including academic culture, administration and governance, leadership in higher education, EDID, financial sustainability, and faculty labour relations. Knowledgeable speakers will offer their insights into the sector and explore what makes it unique.

The in-person workshop provides an opportunity to forge new connections with others from around the country working in similar positions and build your network during breaks and open discussions.

Workshop participants will be guided to develop a high-level action plan for their institution’s data governance journey, using a customized version of CAUBO’s Data Governance Framework for Higher Education. Come prepared with a list of your institution’s mission and larger transformation initiatives. We will discuss how data governance can advance institutional priorities and identify objectives that can effectively support them. Tools for maturity assessment and benchmarking of data management capabilities will also be introduced to help you track your institution’s progress and maturity level.

Zamyla is the Artificial Intelligence and Higher Education Lead at Deloitte. Her journey with data and artificial intelligence began at Harvard University, where she obtained her Honors Bachelors, Masters, and PhD degrees. During this time, she also designed curriculum and was a Lead Instructor for CS50, an intensive introductory computer science course, both on campus and to millions of students worldwide on edX.Within Omnia AI, Deloitte Canada’s Data and Artificial Intelligence practice, Zamyla supports the development of solutions in data, analytics, and artificial intelligence within higher education and the government and public sector.

Institutions across the country are actively attempting to defend themselves against cyber threats, which are constantly increasing in number and level of sophistication. Just how prepared are we? And how do we know we are improving? This workshop will focus on the activities required to assess and improve our individual and collective cybersecurity postures.

Preparedness will be discussed from the following perspectives:

  • Can preparedness be measured?
  • What preventative actions should be taken at the institutional level? Which are best achieved in collaboration with others?
  • What levers do post-secondary institutions have to enhance their preparedness? What role do policies and the control environment play in increasing compliance and ensuring accountability? What are the barriers?
  • Can information be shared in ways that enhance preparedness, yet do not impact privacy and other considerations? What are the boundaries of open communication?
  • What role does insurance play? What are the options?

This workshop will provide an opportunity to learn from your peers, hear about and provide input on the many initiatives at play at the regional and national level and, most importantly, share tips, tools (e.g., sample policies), and experiences to take back to your institution and support your preparedness.

News of cyber-security incidents in higher education institutions are regularly making headlines, is your institution next?   Would you know how best to mobilize efforts to respond to the threat?

Participants at the Workshop will have the opportunity to learn from colleagues that have experienced an incident and gain expert insights in response areas such as crisis communication and legal implications of breaches. Preventative tools such as policies and user education will also be addressed.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This workshop is particularly geared to the various stakeholders who may be required to pilot their organization through the complexity of a response to cyber-security threats, including Vice-presidents, CIO’s, Risk Managers and Communications Directors.  Cross-functional teams are strongly encouraged to participate.

Alex Cameron

Alex Cameron is Chair of Fasken Martineau’s Privacy & Information Protection Group. He has a leading practice in the areas of cybersecurity and privacy and is consistently sought out by clients from all industry sectors, including in the higher education sector and numerous Fortune 100 and 500 companies, in his areas of practice. He has helped clients respond to cybersecurity and other data breaches involving millions of affected individuals. In recognition of his expertise, has received a doctoral degree in the field of privacy law and a number of prestigious commissions from the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. He is a former member of the Advisory Board of the International Association of Privacy Professionals, Canada and past Chair of the Canadian Bar Association, National Privacy & Access Law Section. An accomplished litigator, Alex has acted as lead counsel in landmark cases and regulatory investigations in his areas of practice, including in defence of high-profile data breach class action matters, and before all levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada. Alex is one of only two privacy lawyers in Canada ranked in the highest band in the legal rankings guide, Chambers, and is consistently listed in The Best Lawyers in Canada in the fields of Privacy and Data Protection Law. He was also recognized as the 2018 Toronto Privacy and Data Security Law “Lawyer of the Year”.

 

Ted Dodds

Ted is a seasoned IT executive with a passion for the role of universities in society. He has twenty-five years of experience as the CIO in large, complex, research-intensive universities including UBC and Cornell. He has led major transformational initiatives in organizational change, infrastructure management, information systems, IT security, and strategic visioning.

In December 2015, Ted retired from Cornell where he had transformed an eclectic collection of unit-based IT organizations into a cohesive IT@Cornell community while enabling the autonomy of individual units to pursue their specific mission. During this same period, Cornell emerged as a national leader in the effective use of cloud services, deployed more than two dozen new technology services during times of severe resource constraints, and produced high-value low-cost digital content to support the university’s strategic goals in online learning.

Ted continues to serve on the external committees for IT at Harvard University and Washington University in St. Louis. He has conducted external reviews of IT divisions in universities on 4 continents, served as board chair of EDUCAUSE, CANARIE, BCNET, and other education and research organizations, and has authored over a dozen papers and presentations on leading change through information technology.

 

Daniel Tobok

Daniel Tobok is Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Cytelligence Inc.

He is an internationally recognized cyber-security and digital forensics expert as well as a serial entrepreneur who has created and successfully divested a number of cyber-security companies.

Mr. Tobok has more than 20 years of hands-on experience in all facets of cyber intrusions and hacking incidents as well as forensic digital investigations. He eats, sleeps, and breathes cyber-security. He has personally participated in more than 1,000 computer forensic investigations, and more than 800 security audits and risk analysis engagements.

He has consulted to both the private and public sectors in North America and Europe. He is a tireless educator about the increasing frequency of cyber threats, the threats to business, the loss of privacy, and the need for constant vigilance.

Reporters, editors, and producers have sought his opinion and commentary on security breaches and breaking security stories. He has been interviewed in over 200 hundred stories by The Financial PostThe Globe and Mail, The Lawyers WeeklyThe Law Times, CTV, CBC, CityTV, and Global Television.

 

Greg Vanier

Vice-President, National Data Security and Privacy Lead – Edelman Canada

Greg Vanier has spent the majority of his career helping organizations prepare for and respond to incidents that have the potential to impact corporate reputations.

As the national lead of Edelman Canada’s Data Security and Privacy Team, Greg specializes in breach communications planning, incident response support and crisis simulation and training.

Greg has designed data breach and cyber security response strategies for financial institutions, insurance companies, education institutions, health care service providers, and technology companies, and has responded to a number of events across various sectors that involved the loss of sensitive personal information and confidential data.

He has worked with clients across a number of industries and sectors including Fortune 500 companies, non-profits and government agencies, and regularly presents on the topic of crisis and risk communications at universities, conferences and within corporate boardrooms.

Prior to joining Edelman, Greg led the crisis communications and issues management team for Canada’s largest independent public affairs firm, and was a senior leader at a boutique critical communications firm serving Canada’s energy sector.

Greg studied public relations t Mount Royal University, journalism at Grant MacEwan College, and international communications at the Universitat de Vic in Spain.

 

Carrie Takeyasu

Carrie is the Associate Vice President Finance at the University of Lethbridge. She is a Chartered Professional Accountant and has her MBA from Edinburgh Business School of Heriot-Watt University in Scotland. Carrie has over 25 years’ experience in the post-secondary sector.

  Darin LeeDarin Lee is the CIO at University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford, BC. With over 16 years in higher education, leading technology centred change at three distinct institutions, Darin has developed a strong focus on delivering business value from IT investment.

Darin holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Mount Allison University, and certifications in Change Management and Business Analysis. He is currently completing the America’s MBA for Executives at Simon Fraser University.
